The plastic films industry is driven by finding innovative solutions to unsolved problems. In order to achieve these solutions, it has also driven forward the development of new processes and production methods which have revolutionised the way plastic film can be harnessed for the good of society and progress, This sector of our site covers some of the more common processes used to create plastic film products to suit every need.

Summary of Terms in Common Usage

Micron - Used to describe film thickness - 1 micron = 1000th of 1mm

Gauge - Used to describe film thickness (usually now quoted in microns) - 100 gauge = 25.4 microns

Opaque Impenetrable by light - neither transparent nor translucent

Opacity - Measurement of Opaqueness or 'hiding power'

Weld - Method of sealing or joining

Masterbatch - Dye used to colour plastic film

Corona Treatment - The treatment of film surface to accept inks

Dynes - Unit of measurement to determine film surface tension levels (eg Corona treatment level 38 dynes)

Machine Direction - Direction in which polymer is extruded

Cross Direction - Direction around circumference of blown film bubble

Tensile Strength - Overall film tenacity measured in both machine and cross directions, usually quoted ini Newtons

Elongation - Amount film stretches during tests at breaking point
